Library Services

The library’s mission is to provide access to rich, relevant and high quality resources in all available formats to the IISER community. In doing so, the library aligns itself to teaching, learning, and research missions of the institute which is committed to excellence and innovation. 

Online Catalogue ( OPAC)

All housekeeping activities of the library, viz., cataloguing, circulation, acquisition etc. have been computerized and bar-coded using the library management software “Koha.” The users can browse, retrieve, and cart the received information regarding books housed in the library. Information regarding the number of copies available, the shelf location of a book, virtual shelving with the image of the book, and link to the full text of books etc. are also available on the online catalogue.
The profile of the borrower, borrowing capacity, borrowing history, due date of issued books, overdue days, overdue amount etc. can be viewed on the online catalogue after the member logs in to his/her account. 

 

Borrowing of Library Documents

Library provides general access to collection and a full range of loan services. These services includes issue of documents from the circulating collections (Reference Books are not allowed), checking in returned materials, and shelving of reading materials and help you in locating items in the stack area and deal with related matters. At least one copy of the text book will be reserved as “Reference Copy” will be used only in library premises.

 

Reference and Information Services

Every floor of the library is provided with self serviced Information Kiosks. Apart from android and touch screen featured Information kiosks, the Library also offers individualized service to assist students, faculty, researchers, staff and walk-in-user in locating the required information or information resources available in the Library.  Library staff at the circulation desk are available to help readers to

  • Discover the rich collection of reading materials.
  • Identify and use electronic and print reference tools.
  • Formulate information search strategies.
  • Locate information in the library and elsewhere.
  • Answer specific information questions. 

This service is provided in person or by email or in chat mode. Users are encouraged to get in touch with Librarian by clicking “Ask Librarian”

 

Circulation  Policies

Borrowing facility of reading materials is available to the faculty, research scholars, students and staff of the Institute. The registration to use the Library facility and services is automatic to the faculty and staff on joining the Institute and for students on registration for the courses.

The rules are framed to facilitate and promote, rather than to constrain, the use of library collection and services.

New Arrivals

Newly added books will be displayed on the “New Arrivals” rack. A fortnightly list of these books along with images will also be displayed on the library website and list will be retrieved by clicking on 'New Arrivals“. 

Reservation of Book

Members can reserve only those materials, which are already issued. One Can reserve the book through Log­-In with borrower online account. The user will be intimated through email once the book is checked-in. One reader can reserve only one book at a time. Reserved books will be put on hold at the Circulation Desk for maximum of two working days (inclusive of the day on which it is received/returned) from the date of return by previous borrower. If a member who has reserved the book fails to pick up the same within this period, the reservation stands cancelled.

"Overdue" Alert Service

The borrower gets automatic email reminders in “advance” (Faculty ­ before 3 days, students before 2days and Staff ­ before 2 days) and also on the day the book falling due. Later “Overdue” e­mails will be sent at 4.00 am regularly till it returns / reissue indicating the amount of overdue to be paid.  

Photocopying Facility:  Photocopying facility is available to members at Rs. 1.00 per page. However this service is limited to reading materials available in the library like books, research papers published in journals, conference proceedings for academic and research work without violating the Copy Right Act.

Inter Library Loan:

 

Library arranges to borrow documents that are not available in its collection, on Inter Library Loan from other academic and research institutions/members of DELNET as well as Tricity libraries. This is done on an Institution-to-Institution basis. Such materials will have to be handled with utmost care and returned to the library well on time. This service is provided for academic and research purpose to the faculty, research scholars, students and staff who are members of the library. Members are requested to send a formal request to the library with complete bibliographic details of documents required.

Document Delivery Service:

Library arranges to get photocopies of Scientific articles from journals, conference proceedings and books etc that are not held in its collection from different sources like DELNET,IITs, NITs, IISERs ,INFLIBNET etc., There is no separate charge for providing the service to the library members.  This service is provided for academic and research purpose to the faculty, research scholars, students and staff, who are members of the library. Members are requested to send a formal request to the librarian with complete bibliographic details of documents required essentially with Pdf link.

Kindly note that the required document(s) is/are being sent to the member are meant to be used for  academic and research

Newspaper Clippings:

In the “Science News Corner,” the library displays newspaper clippings on science and technology at 10.00 am every day. This News corner is located at left side of library entry. It updates the readers about the current research carried out in the area of science and technology.  

Digital Library:

For accessing the electronic resources subscribed by library, open access resources as well as Institute publications, every floor of library is enabled with computing facility with wired network as well as Wifi.

Institutional Repository:

Library has set up an Institutional Repository by using open source software, "DSpace." The software helps to preserve and provide access to digital content generated by IISER Mohali Community. It is accessible within the institute campus through the library website. The full text of research articles published by IISER Mohali community, MS and PhD theses of students and various reports generated by the institute, news clippings on IISER Mohali, audio/ photographs / videos of institute events etc. are available and accessible within campus. Institutional Membership/ Resources Sharing

IISER Mohali is a core member of e-Shodsindhu, IISER Library Consortium and an associate member of INFLIBNET and a member of DELNET. The membership helps in mutual sharing of scholarly resources to help library members for academic and Research purpose..  

Library Orientation:

Library offers an orientation program to the students and others at the beginning of every academic year. Through this program, efforts are made to familiarize every new member with the resources, services, and facilities offered by the library. The program also sensitizes the users about the policies, rules & regulations of the library.  

Workshops to Readers :

To familiarize the database / e­-resources being subscribed by library, regular workshops will be conducted to the faculty, students and staff. However if it is essential, the library also gives individual training to its members on case to case basis.

Training Programmes to Readers :

In order to sensitize the readers, the library Conducts Seminar / Workshops / 'Hands-on“ Training programmes on various Themes like Technical Writing / Writing Skills/Copy Rights /Plagiarism etc.,  

Book Exhibitions :

To bring awareness among user Community on recent books published in their subject areas, the library organizes Book Exhibition twice in a year. Empanelled Book vendors will be invited to display latest books published in Institute subject areas which covers curriculum, Research, Projects handling etc in the Institute.
